Media Technologies/Web Technology Concentration, A.A.S.


Degree: Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.)

Program description. The Media Technologies program encompasses related career-technical disciplines in five general concentrations: Audio Production Engineering , Design for Web and Print , Photography , Video Production Technology  and Web Technology . Students have the opportunity to earn a degree in a cross-disciplinary environment that reflects the trend in industry. The program employs instructors with years of practical experience and is guided by working professionals.

The Media Technologies program is designed to offer greater flexibility to students who can, working with an advisor, design a custom curriculum best suited to their needs and interests. The program offers certificates for those needing broader, deeper and/or upgraded training. To learn more about these options, see the Certificate Programs  section of this Catalog.

Web Technology concentration. The Web Technology curriculum offers hands-on experience in designing webpages and developing websites. Students develop and maintain websites using authoring and scripting languages, create content and digital media, manage and deploy e-business solutions servers and maintain websites for small- to large-scale enterprises. Some courses are delivered completely online, and many courses are taught in the classroom as well, enabling students to choose the course delivery method best suited to their learning style.

Typical job opportunities: E-commerce specialist, webmaster, website designer, website developer, online services manager and website manager

Program goals. Upon completion of a Media Technologies program, the graduate will have developed the skills, knowledge and abilities to accomplish the following:

  1. Create media that communicate the desired message to the intended audience.
  2. Demonstrate mastery of the fundamentals within the medium of concentration.
  3. Apply various styles in communications media that display a grasp of both design and communication principles and techniques.
  4. Demonstrate proficiency in the techniques, equipment, software, hardware and materials for the production of appropriate content within ever-evolving media.
  5. Demonstrate understanding of the rights and responsibilities of the artist, subject, client, user and employer, including intellectual property rights.

Courses and Course Sequence


This sequence can be followed by students who begin college-level work in the fall semester. Prerequisites may apply to specific courses; it is the student’s responsibility to determine if prerequisites have been met. An academic advisor is provided for each student. Prior to registering each semester, the student is expected to consult with his/her assigned advisor.

Elective to be chosen from APE 1015 , PHO 1000 , VPT 1030 , or VPT 1045 .

2GEN ED
Elective to be chosen from one unduplicated course in the categories of Communication, Humanities/Fine Arts, Mathematics/Natural Sciences or Social/Behavioral Sciences in the General Education  section of this Catalog. Courses from the list of History electives will not meet the requirement for this degree.

3HUM/FA / MATH/NS / SBS
See the General Education   section of this Catalog for electives. Web Technology students are strongly encouraged to take either ART 2010  or ART 2020  as a Humanities/Fine Arts elective.

4MDT
Electives to be chosen, based on students’ career goals, from any APE, DWP, MDT, PHO, VPT, or WEB course that is not a requirement of the Web curriculum. Electives must be approved by the student’s advisor or the program coordinator. Some courses may require prerequisites. Students planning to pursue careers in a web application developer field should complete the following courses in the order listed: CITC 1303  and CITC 2375 .
