Program description. The Media Technologies program encompasses related career-technical disciplines in five general concentrations: Communication Graphics Technology , Design for Web and Print , Photography , Video Production Technology and Web Technology . Students have the opportunity to earn a degree in a cross-disciplinary environment that reflects the trend in industry. The program employs instructors with years of practical experience and is guided by working professionals.
The Media Technologies program is designed to offer greater flexibility to students who can, working with an advisor, design a custom curriculum best suited to their needs and interests. Video Production Technology concentration. The Video Production Technology concentration offers condensed but intensive hands-on experience with industry-standard equipment and processes. This concentration allows students to focus their study on a specific area of Video Production: Animation, Sound, and Video.
Animation option focuses on skills and knowledge required to succeed in the competitive fields of animation, motion graphics, visual effects and visualization. Curriculum begins by building an understanding of the history, major terms, concepts and techniques of animation. Industry-standard software and equipment is used to cover basic principles and progress through advanced tools and workflows used by studios for broadcast, film, visualization and game design. Typical job opportunities: 2D animator, 3D animator, modeler, concept artist, motion graphics designer, visual development artist, storyboard artist, environment design artist and visual effects artist.
Audio Production Engineering option focuses on skills and knowledge used in postproduction studio, broadcast studio, live sound studio and on-location using commercially popular equipment and software. Basic and advanced training in acoustics, studio recording, location recording, editing, mixing, life sound mixing, producing, sound design, media management, and budgeting are covered. Course content includes three avenues of audio production: recording, broadcast and sound. Typical job opportunities: Live sound engineer, postproduction audio editor, studio engineer, sound designer, broadcast engineer, location audio engineer and producer.
Video Production option focuses on skills and knowledge used in a broadcast studio and on location using commercially popular equipment and software. Basic and advanced training in scriptwriting, audio recording and mixing, electronic cinematography and lighting, producing, directing, budgeting and editing are covered. Course content includes three phases of digital production. Typical job opportunities: Videographer, editor, video illustrator and production assistant.
Program goals. Upon completion of a Media Technologies program, the graduate will have developed the skills, knowledge and abilities to accomplish the following:
- Create media that communicate the desired message to the intended audience.
- Use a wide variety of industry-standard equipment, techniques, software, hardware and materials to produce the appropriate content.
- Demonstrate various styles in communications media that display a grasp of both design and communication principles and techniques.
- Demonstrate proficiency in the techniques and equipment that facilitate adaptation to constantly changing media.
- Understand and respect the rights and responsibilities of the artist, subject, client, user and employer, including intellectual property rights.
- Create a portfolio demonstrating design and communication skills, technical competence, and industry standards and practices.
