Administrative Professional Technology/Medical Office Concentration, A.A.S.

Program description. Administrative Professional Technology offers a core curriculum that provides an academic/technical foundation for individuals preparing for positions in health careers using computer applications and administrative skills. During the last semester of the two-year curriculum, administrative skills are assessed using Office Proficiency Assessment and Certification (OPAC), developed by the International Association of Administrative Professionals. OPAC uses industry-accepted testing and validation techniques. It measures proficiency and knowledge in computer software, clerical, financial and professional areas. Students may choose to certify based on the results of the assessment.

Students passing the Certified Administrative Professional (CAP) examination are granted 19 semester hours of credit at Pellissippi State for certain courses which apply to a certificate or degree.  For complete details on alternative ways to earn credit, see the information on “Prior Learning Assessment”: www.pstcc.edu/pla.

Medical Office concentration. This curriculum provides a course of study for individuals preparing for positions in a medical office. Courses allow for specialized training in medical terminology, coding, and insurance using the latest hardware and software for offices.

Typical job opportunities: Coding, billing, and insurance specialist; medical/office manager; medical administrative assistant, compliance specialist

Program goals. Upon completion of an Administrative Professional Technology program, the graduate will have developed the skills, knowledge and abilities to accomplish the following:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of computer application programs.
  2. Use terminology and reference materials specific to the field.
  3. Work independently or function within a work team to complete projects.
  4. Apply knowledge of emerging technology trends.
  5. Apply proofreading skills involving grammar, punctuation and language arts.
  6. Use the Internet for research and communication.

Courses and Course Sequence


This sequence can be followed by students who begin college-level work in the fall semester. Prerequisites may apply to specific courses; it is the student’s responsibility to determine if prerequisites have been met. An academic advisor is provided for each student. Prior to registering each semester, the student is expected to consult with his/her assigned advisor.

To enroll in this Internship course, students must be in pursuit of an A.A.S. degree in Administrative Professional Technology; have completed 15 hours of ADMN courses with a minimum 2.5 GPA in APT courses and an overall minimum 2.0 GPA; be enrolled in the semester in which the student will graduate; have completed and submitted the Internship application to the BCT internship coordinator prior to enrollment in the course and beginning of the term.
