Communication I Certificate

This certificate will highlight the specific mastery of oral and written communication necessary to succeed in various fields of employment. Entry-level positions in communication-based industries (teaching, marketing, human resources, journalism, etc.) require basic and advanced knowledge of the program outcomes listed below. Additionally, occupations in areas as diverse as the arts, healthcare, computer information technology, construction, engineering, business, and legal enterprises prefer applicants with higher-level communication skills.

For many of the degrees offered by PSCC, students are typically advised to take general education courses in ENGL and COMM as well as the required College Success course in the first semester. Each of these courses provides necessary instruction in effective communication, information literacy, critical thinking, problem-solving, and cooperative work. By showing mastery of the student learning outcomes in these courses (achieving a B or higher in the course), students will have completed the first step to earning the Communication I Certificate. As a capstone, or advanced action, to complete the certificate requirements, students must visit Career Development for feedback on a CV or resume and a cover letter as well as perform a mock interview.

Student completion of the requirements listed above will be coordinated by staff in records and Career Development; however, the process will be facilitated by the Career Engagement Coordinator, who will report directly to the Dean of the appropriate school. A Career Development staff member will verify completion of the advanced actions to verify that student has received feedback on a CV/resume and cover letter and performed a mock interview.
