Mechanical Engineering Technology, A.A.S.

Program description. The traditional Mechanical Engineering Technology program offers students a broad spectrum of knowledge and skills related to mechanical component and system design. Areas of emphasis include materials, material testing, machine shop practices, manufacturing processes, fluid mechanics with power applications, applied mechanics, electrical fundamentals, and computer-aided drafting and design. In addition, courses place emphasis on safety, teamwork, communications skills and efficient work practices.

Typical job opportunities: Mechanical engineering technician, engineering assistant, mechanical designer, plant engineering technician, project management assistant, engineering materials lab technician and technical sales

Program goals. Upon completion of the Mechanical Engineering Technology program, the graduate will have developed the skills, knowledge and abilities to accomplish the following:

  1. Apply an intermediate level of competency with computer applications common to modern industry.
  2. Understand and use industry codes and practices necessary to function in an industrial environment.
  3. Understand and apply the various materials used to manufacture products, along with the various manufacturing processes used to convert these materials into finished goods.
  4. Assimilate and practice the concepts and principles of working safely in a team environment.
  5. Demonstrate skill and knowledge in preparation for industry-recognized certification examinations.

Program competencies.  Upon completion of the Mechanical Engineering Technology program, the graduate will have developed the skills, knowledge and abilities to accomplish the following:

A. Apply the knowledge, techniques, skills and modern tools of the program of study to specifically defined mechanical engineering technology activities.
B. Demonstrate the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering and technology by applying it to mechanical engineering technology problems using developed practical knowledge.
C. Conduct and report the results of standard tests and measurements, and conduct, analyze, and interpret experiment or project results.
D. Function effectively as a member of a technical team.
E. Identify, analyze and solve specifically defined mechanical engineering technology-based problems.
F. Employ written, oral and visual communication in a technical environment.

Courses and Course Sequence


This sequence can be followed by students who begin college-level work in the fall semester. Prerequisites may apply to specific courses; it is the student’s responsibility to determine if prerequisites have been met. An academic advisor is provided for each student. Prior to registering each semester, the student is expected to consult with his/her assigned advisor.
