Engineering Technology/Civil Engineering Concentration, A.A.S.

Program description. Engineering Technology offers a core curriculum with multiple concentrations:  Civil Engineering , Industrial Maintenance , Manufacturing  and Sustainable Design 

Civil Engineering concentration. The Civil Engineering concentration provides an academic/technical foundation to train skilled individuals to function effectively as assistants to civil engineers, environmental engineers, architects, developers or construction managers. A successful graduate from this concentration will exhibit skills in leadership, teamwork, communication, use of technology, and will be able to support the planning, analysis, design and construction of higher-capacity transportation, water supply pollution control systems, and large buildings and building complexes. Students will become proficient in testing and design, cost budgets, scheduling and technical reporting. This concentration allows students to focus their study on a specific area of Civil Engineering: Architectural Design Technology, Construction Engineering Technology or Construction Science.

Architectural Design Technology option:  This option prepares graduates in commercial and residential architectural fields. Students will gain skills in computer drafting as well as architectural and building design concepts. The curriculum prepares students for a wide range of drafting and design careers working alongside architects, engineers and other professionals.  Students will utilize various software programs, including computer aided design (AutoCAD), 3D computer modeling and building information modeling (BIM-Revit). Typical job opportunities include architectural designer, residential designer, light commercial designer, kitchen/bath designer, CAD technician, BIM technician/specialist, CAD drafter/detailer, designer.

Construction Engineering Technology option:  This option is designed to provide critical job skills in testing and design, estimating, scheduling and technical reporting, preparing graduates for entry-level positions in a broad range of supervisory and management careers related to civil engineering and construction industries.  This option is suited for students who enjoy the outdoors, appreciate utilizing multiple technologies and relish a sense of accomplishment as they see a project grow from construction plans to a finished product. Typical job opportunities include civil engineering technician, construction inspector, construction supervisor, construction site manager, junior estimator, construction materials lab technician, plans reviewer, engineering field representative, junior bridge inspector.

Construction Science option: This option prepares students to transfer seamlessly to the University of Tennessee’s program in Environmental and Soil Sciences, Construction Science concentration. The curriculum prepares students to be effective communicators, to perform technical tasks and to gain valuable leadership and teamwork skills. This option is suited for students who enjoy the outdoors, appreciate utilizing multiple technologies and relish a sense of accomplishment as they see a project grow from construction plans to a finished product.

Program goals. Upon completion of the Engineering Technology program, the graduate will have developed the skills, knowledge and abilities to accomplish the following:

  1. Apply basic engineering theories and concepts creatively to analyze and solve technical problems.
  2. Utilize with a high degree of knowledge and skill equipment, instruments, software, and technical reference materials currently used in industry.
  3. Communicate effectively using developed writing, speaking and graphics skills.
  4. Assimilate and practice the concepts and principles of working in a team environment.
  5. Obtain employment within the discipline or matriculate to a four-year program in engineering or industrial technology.

Program competencies. Upon completion of the Engineering Technology program, the graduate will have developed the skills, knowledge and abilities to accomplish the following:

  A.  Apply the knowledge, techniques, skills and modern tools of the concentration of study to specifically defined engineering technology activities.
  B.  Demonstrate the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering and technology by applying it to engineering technology problems using developed 
       practical knowledge.
  C.  Conduct and report the results of standard tests and measurements, and conduct, analyze, and interpret experiment or project results.
  D.  Function effectively as a member of a technical team.
  E.  Identify, analyze and solve specifically defined engineering technology-based problems.
  F.  Employ written, oral and visual communication in a technical environment.

Courses and Course Sequence


This sequence can be followed by students who begin college-level work in the fall semester. Prerequisites may apply to specific courses; it is the student’s responsibility to determine if prerequisites have been met. An academic advisor is provided for each student. Prior to registering each semester, the student is expected to consult with his/her assigned advisor.

Students not transferring to a 4-year institution may take ENGT 1010 .  Students transferring to a 4-year institution must take COMM 2045  to meet transfer requirements.

4MATH
Students transferring to a 4-year institution must take MATH 1910  and MATH 1920  to meet transfer requirements. Enrollment in MATH 1910 requires completion of MATH 1710  and MATH 1720  with a grade of C or better, or MATH 1730  with a grade of C or better.

5CHEM 1110  
Enrollment in CHEM 1110 requires completion of MATH 1710  or MATH 1730 .
